The Scorpion & The Frog

relationships story trust
The title with an icon of a scorpion. Below it, a caption that reads: "A reflection about learning to trust others."

There once was a scorpion who needed to cross a river. As he walked beside the riverbank, searching for a way across, he spotted a frog resting by the water in the distance. He approached and politely asked the frog if he could ride on his back to the other side.

The frog, afraid of being stung, politely declined. But the scorpion argued that it was in neither of their interests for him to do so. If he were to sting the frog, he would also sink and drown, sharing the same fate.

After consideration, having no other objections, the frog agreed to the scorpion's proposition. The scorpion carefully climbed on the frog's back, and the frog began to swim to the other side. However, halfway across the river, the scorpion stung the frog, dooming them both.

When the frog asked the scorpion why he stung him. The scorpion replied that he simply could not resist the urge. It was in his nature to sting.

Throughout our lives, we may find ourselves in the company of people we love and care for that can't be trusted. As much as we may want to, they may repeatedly break their promises even when it goes against their own best interest.

This well-known fable teaches us it isn't in our power to change others, but only to accept them as they are. We must learn to trust others by their actions, not by their words, or learn to lose our credibility and reputation with them.
